Whats it like to be intersex in the Western Balkans
One in 2,000 babies born worldwide every year is born intersex. Since newborns must be registered as a male or a female, families are often forced to decide on “corrective” and “normalizing” surgeries to assign a gender to their newborn. These leave physical and mental consequences that can last a lifetime. Being intersex can be a lonely experience. Hear it from Kris, a trans and intersex activist living in Belgrade, Serbia. -
